This tall variety, introduced from North America, is
akin to Phyllostachys aureosulcata ‘Aureocaulis’
but is distinguished from the latter by the fine green
stripes and small grooves around the culm. The young shoots tend to
be reddish. Characteristically, some culms may
grow in a zigzag manner. Although apparently
smooth, the culms prove to be slightly hairy when touched. This
bamboo is a runner and can be invasive unless
contained using a rhizome barrier. It is
very suitable for high screens, also on the Northern side of the
garden. It is very hardy, but is also quite tolerant to draught.
