covered with powder and the culm leaves on new culms are orange to red,
providing a startling contrast to the darker green
color of the culms.
The shoots develop very early in the season, from late May on (hence its
Latin name praecox), and can be susceptible to late frost.

It can be used for hedging and as a screen especially
at cold places.
