Title:
Sustainable Management and Quality Improvement of Bamboos and
Products
Subject Index :
Legislation, Regulations; Policies; Coordination, Cooperation
Objective:
The project aims to increase knowledge on the sustainable supply,
use and quality improvement of selected species of bamboo in SE
Asia. Emphasis is placed on the use of bamboo in higher technology
products, whilst recognising the abundance of knowledge on craft and
traditional uses of bamboo in the region.
The main objectives of this research are :
- To develop improved management
and sustained use for bamboos in SE Asia.
- To determine the influence of
management practices on basic culm properties.
- To optimise the processing and
performance of higher technology bamboo products based on
'improved' raw material.
- To disseminate the information
to user groups.
General Information:
The key activities envisaged are :
- Assessment of the effect of
fertiliser and other management (e.g. mounding) on the
productivity and stand quality of natural stands of
Gigantochloa scortechinii, Dendrocalamus pendulus and
Gigantochloa apus in comparison with controls.
- The influence of management
practice on culm properties e.g. density, maturation (cell
wall thickening, lignification), fibre/ground tissue ratios,
internode length will be determined. Molecular markers (PCR
and RAPD) will be used to study the degree of genetic
variability in natural stands.
- Determination of the effect of
raw material quality on the properties of higher technology
products e.g. laminates, parquet, panel products and fibre
products.
- Assessment of the natural
durability and effectiveness of preservative treatments
(including novel approaches such as heat treatment) for the
resistance of culm raw material and laminates/composites
against biodeterioration. Field trials will be established
in SE Asia and EU and durability and performance will also
be assessed in accelerated laboratory tests.
Achievements:
Expected Outcome
The project will create an integrated body of information on raw
material production, culm quality and product performance, for
selected bamboo species in SE Asia. It should lead to the
establishment of a quality assessment for 'improved' culm material
from silviculturally treated stands, develop the use of molecular
markers for early selection of superior genotypes based on desired
'quality' traits and in novel approaches to technological processing
of bamboo. Higher technology applications of bamboo they are likely
to benefit from improvements in the quality of the raw material
supply through silviculture. The results will be disseminated by
information packages, dissemination events in SE Asia, via INBAR and
through publications.
